PDC presents ‘Earthquake Risk’ at West Maui HHARP Workshop

On Thursday, February 16, the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC), in collaboration with the West Maui Taxpayers Association (WMTA), Maui County Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), and Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA), delivered a presentation on “Earthquake Risk in Hawaii” to members of the West Maui community at the Lahaina Civic Center.

This is the first in a series of West Maui Hawaii Hazard Awareness & Resilience Program (HHARP) workshops, to be held February through May of this year.

Developed by PDC in collaboration with HI-EMA, the HHARP program is designed to increase the self-reliance of communities during and after natural hazard events, and reduce the negative impact of disasters by teaching them how to better mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters.

The supporting HHARP Resource Kit offers guidance, presentation materials, templates, posters, and other resources designed to promote awareness of tropical cyclones, earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis.

Communities participating in HHARP will:

  • Learn more about the hazards they face,
  • Assess their risk and vulnerability,
  • Create personal preparedness plans,
  • Assemble disaster supply kits, and
  • Develop a community emergency plan.

Communities that complete the HHARP program will also be officially recognized by the State of Hawaii as an Active HHARP Community.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia—During the recent 2024 Planetary Health Summit and 6th Annual Meeting which took place from April 15-19 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the University of Hawai’i’s Pacific Disaster Center, and Sunway University formalized their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The first collaborative activity planned under the new MOU is a Planetary Health Assessment to create a baseline understanding of the impacts of the planetary health crisis including extreme natural hazards, biodiversity loss, and pollution on the human and earth systems at the national level.
